Garden Details
The St Kateri Habitat at Nativity Catholic Church consists of six small pollinator gardens in the church parking lot, planted by members of Creation Care Ministry. Plants were purchased by the church over several years, in part using grants from Pollinator Protectors Partnership from the Endangered Species Coalition. The plants came from Earth Sangha, a nonprofit public charity based in the Washington, DC, region. Their mission is ecological restoration as a form of socially engaged Buddhism. In the DC area, they operate a volunteer-based program to propagate local native plants, restore native plant communities, and control invasive alien plants. Their Wild Plant Nursery is the region’s most comprehensive effort to propagate native plants directly from local forests and meadows. The plants in the gardens are all local ecotype species, chosen for parking lot area durability and pollinator attraction as well as a variety of blooming seasons. The plants also attract pollinators to the nearby Fiacre Vegetable Gardens, maintained by Creation Care Ministry for the food insecure.
