Garden Details
St Mary Pella was built on 30 acres of Iowa farm ground in 2009. An approximate one mail trail was mowed through our Iowa prairie in 2011. The prairie was grown with native mid-west prairie grasses and flowering seeds. Much of the prairie was placed in CRP ground and must be maintained to meet the state requirements. Five prayer poles were placed throughout the trail with pictures of the five decades so the rosary can be prayed on the walk. The south side of the trail has the beautiful view of our church and the north side surrounded by trees in the back of a 80 acre city park.
Garden Practices
Garden Practices
The prairie is maintained on a yearly basis. The trail is mowed weekly. No chemicals are ever used. The prairie is burned every few years and re-seeded with forbes and grasses.
Over 30 types of native grasses and 20 types of flowering plants have been grown over the past few years.
Our prayer trail is used by many of our parishioners as a walking Rosary trail. It is also used by many dog walkers, joggers, cross country teams, with many family photographs taken by professional photographers.
