Garden Details
The Third Day Garden at St. Edmund is two raised beds and pots of vegetables in the
midst of native plants. It’s tucked behind the church and during all seasons provides a
restful meditation spot for the neighborhood. All of the produce goes to Beyond
Hunger Food Pantry. Our border of native plants supports native bees, and pollinators: we have joined with the Field Museum Monarch Tracking Project.
Garden Practices
Garden Practices
Since its inception, we have maintained all organic practices, using compost as fertilizer, and no pesticides.
Okra, bush beans, various varieities of peppers, spring greens, mustard, eggplant, and cucumbers ..
We are always reaching out to the parish community to help support Beyond Hunger (out local food pantry), by giving a free vegetable seed pack in the spring to grow vegetables, or buying an extra bag of produce during the season to be donated..
We have family activities once a month during the growing season for participants to be involved in the garden and learn about plants and how to grow them.
In September, we partner with 4 other faith-based sites to have an Open Gardens. We invite the public in general to tour our gardens to see what can be grown in limited spaces, and increase awareness of the need of people with food insecurity.
